Max Verstappen’s Journey in the NLS: Challenges and Triumphs

Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula 1 champion, recently had a noteworthy experience at the Nürburgring as he attempted to secure a Category A DMSB Permit Nordschleife (DPN). His debut in the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) was not without its hurdles, yet he remains on track to obtain the necessary licensing through a committee’s evaluation.

The NLS Debut: A Mixed Bag

During his inaugural outing in the NLS, Verstappen participated in two races with the Porsche 718 Cayman, specifically the #980 Cayman, where he teamed up with Chris Lulham in the Cup 3 class. To earn the Category A permit, participants must complete a minimum of 14 laps in a race. Verstappen successfully achieved this requirement with his primary vehicle. Unfortunately, his second vehicle, the #89 Cayman competing in the SP7 class, encountered issues during qualifying, leading to a setback.

Lulham began the race from the pit lane but was unable to finish even a single lap, resulting in Verstappen missing the second classified finish typically needed for a DPN A license. However, there is a provision in place for situations like these, known as the DPN-Committee, which serves as an adjudicating body for special cases.

The DPN-Committee’s Role

The DMSB (Deutscher Motor Sport Bund) has established this committee to evaluate circumstances where drivers may not meet all standard requirements. Since Verstappen’s car officially started the race—even though he did not complete the second classified finish—the committee is expected to grant him the Category A permit. Historically, the panel has been lenient in cases where a finish is lacking, although they tend to be stricter about the number of laps completed.

Despite the challenges he faced, Verstappen performed admirably during his laps. He did not violate any sporting regulations while driving the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 CS, and he clocked impressive lap times throughout the event. The varying weather and track conditions he navigated are likely to be taken into account by the committee when making their final decision.

Future Competitions: A Return to the NLS

Although Verstappen will not participate in the upcoming Sunday races, he has plans to return to the NLS on September 27. He will be behind the wheel of an Emil Frey Ferrari, aiming for an overall victory in this prestigious series. His drive to compete and succeed showcases his relentless pursuit of excellence, whether in Formula 1 or endurance racing.

Falken Motorsports: Dominance on the Track

While Verstappen’s journey unfolded, Falken Motorsports continued to demonstrate their prowess in the NLS. The team once again proved to be an unassailable force, particularly in the SP9 Pro class. Their primary competitor, the HRT Ford GT #6 driven by Frank Stippler and Vincent Kolb, briefly took the lead in the early laps, thanks to an impressive performance from Stippler.

However, as the race progressed, it became evident that Falken’s Michelin tires exhibited superior consistency compared to the Yokohama tires used by the Ford team. The #3 Porsche, piloted by Julien Andlauer and Joel Sturm, regained the lead before the initial round of pit stops. Meanwhile, the sister car, #4 Porsche, engaged in a thrilling duel with Stippler for the second position.

Technical Difficulties for HRT

HRT’s ambitions were dashed after just eight laps when technical issues forced the Ford GT into the garage, allowing Falken Motorsports to seize complete control of the race. Just when it seemed that the race was settling into a predictable outcome, an unexpected rain shower on lap 18 added an element of unpredictability. The northern section of the circuit quickly became flooded, causing several teams to miscalculate their tire strategy by staying on slicks for an extra lap.

This sudden change in conditions led to complications for multiple cars in the smaller classes, resulting in collisions with the barriers. However, the frontrunners managed to navigate the treacherous circumstances successfully. In the chaos, the #3 Porsche extended its lead over the #4 by more than a minute.

Managing the Wet Conditions

As the race continued, Sturm in the #3 Porsche switched to wet tires, allowing him to focus on maintaining the gap he had built. This tactical decision ultimately paved the way for Falken’s latest victory, marking the team’s 13th win with Porsche in the last 15 NLS races. Falken Motorsports has established itself as a dominant player in the 2025 NLS season, with no signs of faltering.

Conclusion: The Road Ahead

Max Verstappen’s foray into the NLS has been an exciting chapter in his racing career, showcasing his determination and adaptability in the face of challenges. With the support of the DPN-Committee, he is on track to secure his Category A permit, allowing him to continue his journey in endurance racing. Meanwhile, Falken Motorsports has solidified its status as a powerhouse in the series, with impressive performances that leave competitors striving to catch up.

Verstappen’s return to the NLS in the Emil Frey Ferrari will undoubtedly be a highly anticipated event, as fans and competitors alike will be eager to see how he performs in a different vehicle. As the racing season unfolds, the excitement and unpredictability of motorsport continue to captivate audiences, making every race a thrilling spectacle.
