Dennis Hauger’s New Journey: Transitioning from Formula 2 to Indy NXT with Andretti Global

Dennis Hauger’s career in motorsport is a familiar narrative for many aspiring Formula 1 drivers. His journey began with success in karting, where he won several championships before making his way into the Formula 1 feeder series. Hauger ascended through the ranks, clinching the Italian F4 championship, followed by a triumphant 2021 season in Formula 3 with Prema Racing, where he outperformed notable competitors, including current Alpine F1 driver Jack Doohan. After achieving significant milestones in Formula 2, including multiple race victories and a commendable runner-up position in the prestigious Macau Grand Prix, Hauger has now set his sights on a new chapter in his career: IndyCar.

This shift is becoming increasingly common among young racers who have progressed through the junior ranks of European motorsport, often finding the pathway to the 20-driver Formula 1 grid to be exceedingly narrow. Hauger has signed with Andretti Global to compete in the 2025 Indy NXT season, marking a significant transition in his racing career.

A New Home in American Racing

In an exclusive conversation with Motorsport.com, Hauger shared insights into his decision-making process as he prepared for the 2025 season. "We explored various options, but it became clear that if my focus wasn’t strictly on Formula 1, then I needed to consider what the next step would be after my fourth year in Formula 2," he explained. Hauger acknowledged that while IndyCar was a possibility, the transition from Europe to America presents unique challenges, including lesser-known names and budget constraints compared to his peers.

Hauger expressed excitement about competing in Indy NXT, describing it as an appealing series that would allow him to adapt to American racing culture while showcasing his abilities. "The atmosphere and mindset here feel refreshing—a new beginning for me. I’m eager to prove myself in this series and the wider community," he added. With his focus firmly on achieving results, Hauger is enthusiastic about his new adventure in the United States with the esteemed Andretti team.

Embracing the Challenge of a New Series

Making the decision to join Andretti Global wasn’t particularly difficult for Hauger. He believes that aligning with such a historic team enhances his prospects in American racing. His adaptability has already been put to the test, as he made an impressive debut at the St. Petersburg street circuit, securing a victory despite being unfamiliar with the track layout. In addition to navigating the twists and turns of an unfamiliar circuit, Hauger has had to acclimate to the distinct characteristics of the Indy NXT car, which he finds to be more in tune with his driving style compared to Formula 2 vehicles. He noted that the Indy NXT car feels more ‘natural’ to him, enhancing his confidence on the track.

However, Hauger is aware of the urgency of his situation. "I recognize that my primary objective this season is to win the championship. I likely won’t have two years in this series; this is my moment to prove myself," he stated.

Learning the Ropes of Oval Racing

One of the most significant hurdles for European drivers transitioning to American racing is the unique challenge of competing on oval tracks. Hauger had a chance to experience this during a test in Nashville earlier this year. He approached the experience with enthusiasm rather than trepidation, a refreshing perspective compared to some of his peers. "It was incredible," Hauger remarked about the oval racing experience. "The racing dynamics are different, particularly in how you manage slipstream and dirty air to gain momentum. It’s exhilarating to push yourself flat out on an oval; it feels like you’re a superhero out there."

A Focused One-Year Plan

With Hauger eyeing a one-year stint in Indy NXT, he is also contemplating his future in IndyCar. "My plan is to commit to one season, regardless of the outcomes," he emphasized. "I aim to secure a spot on the IndyCar grid for 2026. The championship is my primary focus for now, but I’m aware of the potential that lies ahead."

Though Hauger wouldn’t reject the opportunity to return to Formula 1 someday, he remains dedicated to his current path. "I’m fully invested in Indy NXT and IndyCar. My strategy is to take it race by race with Andretti, maximizing my performance to demonstrate my capabilities," he explained.

IndyCar vs. Formula 1: A Personal Perspective

The comparison between IndyCar and Formula 1 is a popular topic among motorsport enthusiasts. Having experience in both, Hauger offers a thoughtful perspective on the ongoing debate. "From my viewpoint, I don’t perceive IndyCar as a lesser series than F1," he stated. "In many ways, it’s more exciting, with fiercely competitive racing and a high caliber of drivers. The variety of racing formats—ovals, road courses, and street circuits—along with the legendary Indianapolis 500, creates a unique blend of challenges. For me, it’s a balanced competition."

To facilitate his transition to Indy NXT, Hauger has sought advice from seasoned drivers and industry experts, including former F1 driver Marcus Ericsson, the 2022 Indy 500 winner, and fellow Norwegian racer Anders Krohn, who played a pivotal role in connecting him with Andretti.

As the early leader in the championship standings, Hauger understands that the journey ahead is still long and demanding. Nearly every track on the 14-race schedule is new to him, including four oval circuits. However, if he can achieve his goal of winning the championship, the prospect of securing a seat in the 2026 IndyCar grid will likely become a tangible reality for this promising young driver.
