Louis Foster Shines in Qualifying at Road America
On an intensely hot Saturday in Wisconsin, Louis Foster, a rookie driver for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLRR), demonstrated remarkable composure. Just a day after trimming his mustache, Foster clocked a remarkable lap time of 1:44.5141 seconds during the closing minutes of the Fast 6 qualifying session, securing the pole position for Sunday’s XPEL Grand Prix at Road America. This achievement marks the first pole position in the young Briton’s burgeoning career in the NTT IndyCar Series.
Foster’s impressive performance in qualifying came as a significant surprise to him and his team, especially after the initial round. “I told the guys not to put the red tires on when we made it to the Fast 12, as I wasn’t confident we would advance to the Fast 6,” Foster recounted in an interview with FOX. “I was completely wrong! It’s absolutely amazing. I couldn’t have asked for a better start to the weekend, and I’m still in disbelief.”
Qualifying Highlights
Entering the final round of qualifying, Alex Palou was considered the frontrunner for pole position, having led both his group and the Fast 12 session. However, in a dramatic twist, Palou’s best lap time placed him second, just 0.1159 seconds behind Foster. Kyle Kirkwood, meanwhile, settled for third place, having only enough time for a single lap after his Andretti Global team faced a minor issue with the MGU (Motor Generator Unit).
Rounding out the top five were Scott McLaughlin and Christian Lundgaard, with Graham Rahal taking sixth place, completing a strong showing for RLRR as the only team with two drivers in the final qualifying round. Palou had led the earlier Fast 12 session, edging out Lundgaard, while Foster squeezed through to secure his spot in the top six in the final moments. McLaughlin, Kirkwood, and Rahal also advanced, with Rahal managing to push out Will Power during the last moments of the session. Both David Malukas and Power fell short of advancing, narrowly missing out on a spot in the Fast 6.
Completing the top ten were Callum Ilott and Josef Newgarden, with Pato O’Ward and Felix Rosenqvist also making it to the Fast 12. Ilott’s performance marked his best qualifying result of the season and was a significant achievement for Prema Racing on a road course. “I’m really pleased with how we did,” Ilott stated. “It’s a solid effort and a great starting point, so I can’t complain.”
Group Dynamics in Qualifying
In the opening qualifying group, Palou set the pace, followed closely by Rahal, Scott Dixon, Ilott, and O’Ward as they all advanced in the closing moments of the session. Kirkwood wrapped up his run early despite having time for one final lap after briefly leading the charts. This decision proved risky, as he barely held onto the last advancing spot, finishing just 0.0173 seconds ahead of Josef Newgarden. Fortunately for Newgarden, a qualifying interference penalty for Dixon allowed him to move on to the Fast 12.
The second qualifying group saw its own share of late surprises, with Lundgaard leading the way after demonstrating strong pace in the morning practice. McLaughlin, Malukas, Power, Rosenqvist, and Foster also advanced from this group. Notably, Andretti Global’s Marcus Ericsson and Colton Herta were eliminated early, qualifying in 14th and 16th places, respectively. This marked the first time Herta had failed to progress beyond the first round at Road America in seven attempts. “There’s nothing to be happy about with this result,” Herta commented.
The qualifying session took place under intense conditions, with track temperatures soaring above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite the heat, most drivers managed to avoid making significant mistakes. Devlin DeFrancesco went off-track during his first qualifying run but skillfully corrected his car and returned to the racing surface without causing any incidents. Christian Rasmussen also faced a similar situation in the second group, rolling through the gravel trap as he approached the front stretch.
Scott Dixon’s Controversial Penalty
As the qualifying session unfolded, Scott Dixon’s hopes for a strong starting position were dashed when he received a penalty for impeding DeFrancesco during the opening group session. Although Dixon had initially qualified based on his pace, he was deemed to have obstructed DeFrancesco, resulting in a penalty that would see him start from the back of the grid on Sunday.
Reflecting on the incident, the two-time Road America winner explained, “I knew [DeFrancesco] was getting close, but I was trying to keep clear of the 15 and get a lap in. I thought I had created enough of a gap, but I had a significant overboost as I tried to get back up to speed, which closed the gap again.” Dixon expressed regret over the situation, stating, “I certainly didn’t want to ruin anyone’s day. I may have gotten in the way of Devlin a little, but I was just trying to ensure I got a clean lap.”
As a result of the penalty, Dixon will start 25th in the race, marking the worst starting position of his career at Road America. This setback comes at a pivotal moment in the season, as the veteran driver entered the weekend sitting fifth in the championship standings, 129 points behind his Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Palou, and in need of a strong performance to remain competitive.
Despite the tough circumstances, Dixon has experience bouncing back from challenging positions at the 4.048-mile road course. Earlier in 2023, he started 23rd but managed to execute a strategic recovery drive, finishing fourth by the race’s end.
