Looking ahead to next week, I think racing in Monaco as a rookie will be impressive and quite challenging, but I’m very excited and can’t wait to drive an F1 car there for the first time.”
On the other hand, Lawson expressed his disappointment with the outcome, saying, “I’m quite disappointed for everyone; we were hindered by the safety cars today. We had good potential and pace throughout the weekend, but unfortunately, we couldn’t showcase that. It was a tough weekend, but I will keep working hard to bounce back. We’re always learning from the car, and I’m getting more accustomed to it each weekend; we’re heading in the right direction. Monaco is an iconic track, and it’s my first time there, so I’m excited to get there. It’s really special, and I’ll have to adapt quickly. I’m looking forward to arriving there and getting straight back to action.”
Team principal Laurent Mekies highlighted the positive pace of the cars following the introduction of updates. “After traveling around the world for the last three months, it was a pleasant experience to return to Europe and to our home race. Thanks for the great work from everyone in Faenza and Milton Keynes. We implemented some updates on both cars, and with the factory close by, a large number of staff could come to the track, with seats in our dedicated grandstand to see the results of all their work. It’s encouraging to see that the changes to the car provided the pace to put us in the fight in the tightest part of the midfield. Although Isack and Liam know Imola well, neither of them had raced an F1 car here before, and the narrow track, complex curbs, and gravel traps present a real challenge. Additionally, all drivers had to contend with the unknowns of the C6 tire, the softest from Pirelli.”
Overall, the performance over the weekend was strong, both in qualifying and the race, with Isack finishing 9th in both instances. He executed a brilliant race today, being one of the cars capable of making an almost perfect pit stop. The first virtual safety car helped us a bit, while the second was a dilemma, as we decided to put on another set of new tires but got stuck in a DRS train behind Carlos Sainz and George Russell. We’ll take the two points and continue to work hard as a team to keep improving in all areas, as we have been doing over the past year. Liam’s weekend certainly seemed more challenging overall, but we can see that his speed is evident in the data, and once again today, he was unlucky with the timing of the safety cars. Now we move straight to Monaco—a very different type of track—but the lessons learned here will still be useful, especially regarding qualifying, which is often the key moment on the streets of Monte Carlo,” Mekies concluded.
