Gabriel Bortoleto: The Rising Star in Formula 1
Formula 1 is a relentless arena where drivers often concentrate on the future, tirelessly striving for improvement and a secure position on the starting grid. However, one young driver stands out for his ability to reflect on his journey and appreciate his achievements along the way: Gabriel Bortoleto. At just 20 years old, this Brazilian talent combines youthful exuberance with a maturity that belies his age, offering insightful reflections on his rapid ascent in motorsport.
A Transformative Journey
Over the past two years, Bortoleto’s life has undergone a remarkable transformation. Just two years ago, he was an aspiring racer without a single-seater title to his name. Fast forward to 2023, and he emerged victorious in the highly competitive FIA Formula 3 Championship, marking a significant milestone in his career. His triumph at Monza not only solidified his reputation but also paved the way for a seamless transition to Formula 2, where he clinched the championship in his debut season.
This newfound success attracted the attention of Sauber, leading them to recruit him from the McLaren junior program. Bortoleto’s rise has been somewhat overshadowed by the larger-than-life personalities in the F1 paddock, including Lewis Hamilton’s successor, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, and Ferrari’s promising driver, Oliver Bearman. Yet, as he prepares for a new chapter in his career, Bortoleto recognizes the fortune that has brought him to this point.
"I feel incredibly fortunate," he shared. "I have many friends who are equally deserving of a shot at Formula 1, and it motivates me to work hard every day. I strive to maximize the opportunities I’ve been given."
Overcoming Challenges
Bortoleto’s journey wasn’t without its hurdles. He moved from Brazil to Italy at the age of 12, where he began his karting career. However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. In 2022, during his second season in Formula Regional, he faced numerous challenges, particularly with engine issues that were not widely publicized. Reflecting on that period, he said, “It was tough, but I learned that I had to roll up my sleeves and push through. Excuses wouldn’t help, and that experience ultimately made me a stronger driver and person.”
His determination paid off. Once the technical issues were resolved, he began to dominate races, culminating in a successful title run. The pivotal moment came during his first test in a Formula 3 car, where he quickly adapted and found himself leading with a significant margin over competitors. “That day, everything came together for me. I realized I could excel at this level,” he recounted.
The Influence of Fernando Alonso
Another key turning point in Bortoleto’s career was the guidance he received from two-time F1 world champion Fernando Alonso and his management team. Under Alonso’s mentorship, Bortoleto entered Formula 3, racing during F1 weekends for the first time. “When I stepped onto the circuit, I understood the weight of racing in front of F1 teams,” he explained. “Fernando was invaluable in helping me handle the pressure and expectations. His willingness to assist, even at the expense of his own time, speaks volumes about his character.”
As Bortoleto continued to excel, he caught the attention of F1 teams, including McLaren. After impressive performances in 2023—where he won the first two feature races—he received a call from Emanuele Pirro, head of McLaren’s young driver program. “I was surprised and honored. It was a great opportunity, and I became the first driver officially signed to their program,” he shared.
A New Chapter with Sauber
Bortoleto’s sudden rise in Formula 2 took everyone, including McLaren, by surprise. By the end of the 2024 season, he emerged as the new champion, but McLaren’s driver lineup meant they couldn’t offer him an immediate seat. “They were transparent with me about their situation. When Sauber presented an opportunity, they supported my move,” said Bortoleto.
Joining Sauber, especially with the impending Audi partnership, represents both a challenge and an opportunity for Bortoleto. He finds himself in a unique situation—afforded the space to grow in his rookie season of 2025. “It’s a good setup for me to adapt without high pressure initially, but I know I need to be ready for the future,” he noted.
Navigating Early Challenges
The start of the 2025 season proved challenging. Bortoleto faced a difficult car and found himself struggling for points. “It was tough to transition from being a champion to fighting at the back. However, I remained focused, and as the season progressed, we improved significantly. It felt great to break into the top ten,” he explained.
Bortoleto’s positive attitude and commitment to the team have not gone unnoticed. His relationship with teammate Nico Hulkenberg has blossomed, with Bortoleto often supporting Hulkenberg’s achievements, including a long-awaited podium finish at Silverstone. “Nico is a fantastic driver and a great person. Celebrating his success felt natural, and it motivates me to aim for similar heights,” he shared.
Learning from the Best
Bortoleto’s development has been supported by various figures in the paddock, including Max Verstappen, who has become a friend and mentor. “Our bond began through our mutual interest in sim racing. He’s been incredibly helpful, guiding me on what to focus on in the simulator,” he explained.
Despite his rising profile, Bortoleto maintains a tight-knit entourage during race weekends, usually only accompanied by his performance coach and manager. “My parents wish they could be here more, but they have their commitments back in Brazil. My father has a lot on his plate as he manages the Stock Car championship,” he said, reflecting on his family’s journey in motorsport.
A New Home in Monaco
Following the trend set by many of his peers, Bortoleto has transitioned from Milan to Monaco, though his time in his new apartment has been limited due to his packed schedule. “I don’t have much free time, especially with my commitment to the team in Hinwil. It’s crucial for me as a rookie to immerse myself in the environment and learn as much as possible,” he stated.
As Sauber prepares to integrate Audi into its operations, Bortoleto finds himself at an exciting yet uncertain juncture in his career. “It’s hard to predict how things will unfold. We have to be ready to fight for points and podiums, but the true measure of our progress will only be seen on the track,” he acknowledged.
The Road Ahead
Gabriel Bortoleto’s journey in Formula 1 is just beginning. Although he may not have been the most publicized rookie in the class of 2025, his consistent performance, including multiple points finishes in the early races, demonstrates that he is ready to carve out his place on the grid.
With a blend of talent, hard work, and the right mentorship, Bortoleto is undoubtedly a driver to watch in the coming seasons. His story is a testament to perseverance, gratitude, and the relentless pursuit of excellence in the world of motorsport. As he continues to navigate the challenges of Formula 1, fans and pundits alike will be eager to see how this rising star capitalizes on his opportunities and grows within the sport.
