Victor Martins: Navigating Challenges in Formula 2 and the Road to F1
Victor Martins, a prominent figure in the Formula 2 circuit, is recognized for his outstanding qualifying performances. However, the young driver has encountered difficulties in transforming this speed into race results, currently finding himself in ninth place in the championship standings. In a recent conversation with Feeder Series during the Silverstone race weekend, Martins opened up about his rollercoaster journey throughout the 2025 season, as well as his transition from the Alpine driver academy to Williams earlier this year.
A Look at Martins’ Current Standing in F2
As a driver for ART Grand Prix, Martins holds the ninth position in the Formula 2 standings with a total of 52 points, trailing championship leader Richard Verschoor by a significant 70 points. After experiencing a challenging second season in 2024, where he finished seventh despite entering the year with aspirations for the championship, Martins made the strategic decision to extend his stay in F2 for a third season in 2025.
The trend in Formula 2 indicates that drivers who participate for three full seasons often struggle to secure full-time positions in Formula 1, even if they have clinched the championship title. Notable examples include Felipe Drugovich and Martins’ former teammate Théo Pourchaire, both of whom were crowned F2 champions in their third seasons in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Despite their successes, both have yet to secure places in F1; Drugovich currently serves as a reserve driver for Aston Martin, while Pourchaire competes in the European Le Mans Series with Algarve Pro Racing.
The Decision to Stay in F2
With some drivers opting to exit F2 after two seasons, citing a lack of F1 opportunities, the question arises: why did Martins choose to remain in the series?
“I don’t see any championship other than F2 to bring me closer to F1,” Martins explained. His focus remains crystal clear, particularly with the support from Williams. “The project we have now together is aimed at helping me achieve this goal,” he added.
Martins elaborated on his objectives for the season, stating, “My racing in F2 is about showcasing my talent—winning races and securing pole positions. Alongside this, I’m grateful for the support from Williams, which includes opportunities in the simulator, TPC days, and potential FP1 sessions.”
He emphasized the importance of focusing on the present rather than dwelling on the past. “I’m not concerned with what others have done in similar situations. It’s all about timing and opportunity. I need to maximize what I currently have, and I believe things will turn out well.”
Transition to Williams Racing Driver Academy
In pursuing his dream of joining the ranks of Formula 1, Martins has embraced a new opportunity with the Williams Racing Driver Academy, which he joined at the beginning of the season. This marked a pivotal change, as he parted ways with Alpine at the end of 2024 after a six-year tenure within the French manufacturer’s junior program.
Reflecting on his move, Martins noted, “The interest from Williams was anticipated.” He was not surprised that another F1 team sought to include him in their academy, given his previous accomplishments. “With Alpine, we reached a point where our visions no longer aligned. Our goals diverged, and that chapter came to a close. Joining Williams felt natural, especially since I had already demonstrated strong performance, particularly in qualifying.”
The Challenges of 2025
Throughout 2025, Martins has consistently qualified within the top three positions in nearly all of the eight rounds of the championship. However, he has faced a series of unfortunate circumstances that have hindered his ability to score points in feature races. Additionally, ART Grand Prix has struggled to find the same race pace that led to their double world championship victory in 2023, leaving them in eighth place with a total of 58 points.
“It’s undoubtedly challenging to accept at times,” Martins admitted. “We often feel frustrated that we haven’t fully capitalized on our qualifying positions on race day in terms of points. It’s disheartening, and we need to analyze the root causes.”
He acknowledged that various factors have contributed to their struggles, including misfortunes such as crashes beyond his control, mechanical issues, and occasional performance deficits. “Missing performance likely accounts for only about 10 percent of what we have missed in terms of potential points. It’s tough, but I believe we are gradually making progress.”
The Road Ahead
As Martins continues his journey in Formula 2, he remains focused on his development as a driver and his aspirations to reach Formula 1. The support from the Williams Racing Driver Academy provides him with essential resources and guidance, enhancing his chances of success.
The racing community is closely watching Martins and his performance as he navigates the complexities of the F2 season. His ability to adapt, overcome challenges, and seize opportunities will be key as he strives for a prominent position in the world of motorsport.
Martins’ story serves as a reminder of the resilience required in the pursuit of racing dreams. With determination and the right support, he aims to transform his qualifying prowess into race-day success, ultimately setting his sights on a coveted seat in Formula 1.
The competitive landscape of Formula 2 is ever-evolving, and Martins is determined to make his mark. Each race presents an opportunity for growth, and with the backing of Williams, he is poised to leverage his talents and work toward his ultimate goal of competing at the highest level of motorsport.
As the season progresses, fans and racing enthusiasts alike will be eager to see how Martins capitalizes on his strengths, learns from his experiences, and whether he can turn his fortunes around in the remaining rounds of the championship. His journey is one filled with potential, and the motorsport world will be watching closely as he races toward a promising future.
