Legge remarked, “The level of hostility directed at myself and my team is part of a broader problem that women face in male-dominated environments. We cannot normalize this situation. It is entirely unacceptable.”
“I have earned my place on that racetrack,” she continued. “I have dedicated 20 years to professional racing, and I am confident that the teams and manufacturers that have employed me over the years did not do so as part of a diversity initiative or gimmick. They chose me because I can drive a race car.”
Reflecting on her experience during the Rockingham race weekend, Legge explained how the negativity she faced will not deter her from her passion for racing. “I am more focused than ever on my commitment to the sport. My abilities as a competitor should define me, not my gender,” she affirmed. “Fortunately, I have faced tougher challenges than those who hide behind screens to criticize me.”
Legge went on to detail her experience at Rockingham, noting that much of the backlash stemmed from the incident during the race. She initially did not qualify but was later able to secure a ride with a different team, which is somewhat common practice in NASCAR. She mentioned that during practice, she displayed a pace that placed her among the top 25 drivers. However, in qualifying, she struggled with the car’s handling, becoming “visibly loose” at the exit of Turn 2. Despite her best efforts, she ended up missing the race due to owner points issues with Jordan Anderson Racing’s No. 32 Chevrolet.
Fortunately, another Chevrolet team stepped in to assist, with J.J. Yeley graciously offering his seat to Legge. This kind of collaboration is not unusual in the NASCAR community. Legge explained how she had to quickly adapt to a new car once the race began, but she managed to keep a competitive pace relative to the rest of the field.
Addressing the wreck, Legge broke it down step-by-step, emphasizing her aim to avoid unnecessary risks. “I gave Sawalich a lane,” she explained, clarifying the dynamics of the incident. “The reason the speed difference looks so significant is not that I braked mid-corner. I maintained my line and speed, which, admittedly, is not the same as the leaders who were passing me. He charged in too aggressively, which caused him to understeer into me, resulting in the spin-out, and unfortunately, Kasey Kahne was caught up in it.”
