Richard Verschoor Dominates in Qatar Formula 2 Sprint Race
Richard Verschoor had a challenging start at the Qatar Formula 2 sprint race, but he made a remarkable comeback on lap four, regaining control of the race. He expertly navigated two late safety car restarts, ultimately clinching his eighth victory in Formula 2, a win that ties him for the record in the series. This victory also keeps his championship aspirations alive. After the race, Verschoor sat down with Feeder Series and a select group of media to discuss his achievement and his plans for his final season in Formula 2.
A Record-Equalling Triumph
In the post-race press conference, Verschoor expressed mixed feelings about statistics, particularly those that highlight his tie with the record for the most wins in Formula 2 history. "I don’t even like those kinds of stats," he stated, adding, "but I’m proud of it. I’m really proud to have been at this level of motorsport." His humility shines through as he acknowledges the significance of his accomplishment.
Verschoor noted that the current season has allowed him to showcase his capabilities. "That was my reason to do another year of Formula 2, being surrounded by big talents," he reflected. He attributes much of his success to his team, emphasizing their support in helping him achieve these victories. "I’m just proud of this team because I think most of the wins come from this year."
A Journey of Growth
Throughout his career in Formula 2, Verschoor has secured victories in each of his four seasons, but this year has been particularly fruitful, with a total of four wins so far. His latest victory in the penultimate sprint race of his final season has brought him level with former champions like Nyck de Vries and Felipe Drugovich, as well as runner-up Artem Markelov from 2017.
In a light-hearted moment, Verschoor remarked on missed opportunities due to disqualifications, saying, "To be fair, I think without all of the disqualifications I should’ve had much more [wins]." He has faced disqualifications from first place on three occasions, an experience that certainly adds a layer of frustration to his racing journey.
Verschoor praised his team, stating, "I could feel already from the moment I signed with MP that I was feeling good," highlighting their role in enhancing his skills as a driver. The Dutch racer believes that continuous learning is crucial, regardless of experience level. "You can always learn more even if you have a lot of experience," he noted. "And then, on the other hand, they also gave me a good car."
The Sprint Race Dynamics
Starting from pole position on a track known for its difficulty in overtaking, Verschoor was well positioned to capitalize on his advantage. However, Joshua Dürksen, who started in second place, launched ahead beautifully and quickly took the lead. Meanwhile, Nikola Tsolov moved up to third, overtaking Rafael Villagómez in the early stages.
Leonardo Fornaroli also made a strong start, moving up to eighth and challenging his Invicta Racing teammate Roman Staněk for seventh. Despite the pressure, Staněk defended his position fiercely, reclaiming seventh place as they approached Turn 7.
Verschoor, undeterred by Dürksen’s lead, maintained close proximity to the front runner until the DRS became available on lap three. He attempted an overtake into Turn 1 but was unsuccessful. However, on the next lap, he executed a brilliant maneuver, overtaking Dürksen around the outside in the same corner.
Tension in the Midfield
As the race progressed, a DRS train formed behind Staněk, which hampered the battle for the lower points positions. This included championship contender Jak Crawford, who had made an impressive jump from 15th to 11th but found himself stuck behind Victor Martins.
On lap 12, an altercation between Red Bull juniors Arvid Lindblad and Oliver Goethe over 14th place resulted in a close call for both drivers. Meanwhile, Martins lost ground after going wide at Turn 5, allowing Crawford and Dino Beganovic to pass him in a dramatic sequence. Gabriele Minì also capitalized on Martins’ misfortune, overtaking him at Turn 1.
In a noteworthy twist on lap 14, Laurens van Hoepen collided with his Trident teammate James Wharton, pushing him wide and leaving Wharton stranded in the gravel. The incident triggered a safety car period, prompting several drivers, including Staněk, Lindblad, Goethe, Kush Maini, Browning, John Bennett, and Cian Shields, to pit. This created a pack of drivers on soft tires, although it was soon reduced when Maini pulled off the track shortly thereafter.
Safety Car Strategy
When the race restarted on lap 17, Verschoor maintained his lead, while van Hoepen struggled, dropping from 14th to last as drivers on soft tires surged past him. Miyata was also overtaken, falling from 13th to 17th, while Martins regained some ground by passing Minì for 11th place.
Another safety car was deployed on lap 20 after Cian Shields spun out of Turn 5, erasing Verschoor’s almost 2.5-second lead. The race finally restarted at the end of lap 22, setting the stage for a thrilling final lap.
Reflecting on the safety car interruptions, Verschoor said, "I was definitely not very happy with the safety cars, but I think I kept my head cool." He executed two different types of restarts successfully, showcasing his racing acumen.
The Final Lap Drama
As the race resumed, Verschoor displayed his skill once again, but chaos erupted behind him. In a bid to overtake Villagómez, Sebastián Montoya, who was in fifth place, attempted an inside move leading into Turn 1. However, Villagómez was also planning an overtake on Tsolov, leading to Tsolov losing control and dropping from third to tenth, out of the points.
In the end, Verschoor crossed the finish line first, marking his eighth victory in Formula 2, with Dürksen and Villagómez following in second and third place, respectively. Verschoor also earned an additional point for setting the fastest lap on lap six.
Looking Ahead
On the podium, Verschoor was joined by Dürksen and Villagómez, all three drivers expressing confidence about their pace for the next race. Verschoor commented, “In the end, you can do whatever strategy you want, but you need the pace. I think that looks good for us.” However, he acknowledged that the conditions would be different for the next race due to changes in temperature.
Dürksen was optimistic about his chances as well, stating, “Anything is possible. Especially with the safety cars, I think this will really make the race very interesting.” He remained hopeful about finishing in the points even from his current position.
Villagómez echoed this sentiment, noting that they had shown strong pace throughout the weekend. “Definitely we’ve had the pace since free practice, qualifying. And then today, I don’t think we were really far off,” he remarked, confident in their ability to improve.
Montoya finished in fourth place, closely followed by Alex Dunne, while Fornaroli secured sixth place, with Martinius Stenshorne making his debut for Rodin Motorsport, finishing seventh. Crawford, who is currently second in the championship standings, managed to grab a point for eighth place.
Championship Implications
As they head into the next feature race, Fornaroli, assuming he starts from pole position, will have a 23-point advantage. To secure the drivers’ championship with a race to spare, he needs to earn at least 17 points more than Crawford. Meanwhile, for Verschoor and Browning, the stakes are high; they cannot afford to lose more than eight and six points, respectively, to Fornaroli to keep their championship hopes alive. Dunne, on the other hand, must gain 20 points on Fornaroli, making the upcoming race crucial for the Irishman.
In terms of team standings, Invicta is currently leading the championship by 17 points over Hitech. With 44 points available in the next race and a total of 65 points up for grabs in the season finale in Abu Dhabi, it makes it impossible for Hitech to clinch the title this weekend.
The excitement of Formula 2 continues to build as the season approaches its climax, with drivers and teams alike gearing up for the final showdown. Fans will be eagerly watching to see how the championship unfolds in the upcoming races.
