To this end, Williams has established several pathways for early careers, including the Komatsu-Williams Engineering Academy, a variety of apprenticeships, graduate programs, and an outreach initiative aimed at introducing 10,000 children to careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at their Grove facility this year.
Insights from Early Career Participants
Recently, we had the opportunity to speak with three individuals participating in different early career programs at Williams Racing. Each of them shared their unique journey to join the team and the roles they currently occupy, shedding light on the impact of these programs on their professional development.
Aaliyah Ascroft: Mechanical Design Engineer
Aaliyah Ascroft serves as a Mechanical Design Engineer at Williams. Her journey began as an industrial placement student, where she contributed to the design and support of the FW45 car for the 2023 Formula 1 season. After completing her studies, she returned to Williams as a graduate.
Aaliyah’s academic background includes a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Glasgow, where she was actively involved with the UGRacing team, serving as the Head of Powertrain Internal Combustion. Her leadership helped the team win the national Formula Student competition.
When asked about her educational journey, Aaliyah reflected, "I started my A-levels with subjects like geography, mathematics, and physics, and eventually pursued further studies in mechanical engineering." She expressed that her decision to apply to Williams was somewhat spontaneous; she felt an attraction to the innovative aspects of Formula 1, despite initially doubting her chances of being accepted.
Aaliyah believes that Williams’ commitment to early career development plays a significant role in the team’s success. "The incredible thing about Williams is that many team members began as early career participants. They understand how to support newcomers because they have walked the same path."
Her experience at Williams has brought several memorable moments, including seeing parts she designed on the actual car and receiving positive feedback from senior management during important meetings. "It’s surreal to see your contributions on the car and to be part of the team," she noted.
Fleur Vermeulen: Aerodynamics Engineer
Fleur Vermeulen, 23, is currently an aerodynamics engineer working in an industrial placement role at Williams. She is pursuing her MSc in Aerodynamics at Delft University of Technology, having previously earned a BSc in Aerospace Engineering. Her journey in motorsport began with the Delft Formula Student Team, where she collaborated with fellow students to design and race their own vehicle.
Fleur was drawn to apply for an early career program at Williams due to the extensive hands-on experience it offers. "This program allows you to gain invaluable experience before you even graduate, which is a huge advantage," she explained. She appreciates the family-oriented atmosphere at Williams and the opportunity to work alongside fellow industrial placement students, gaining insights into various departments within the organization.
Reflecting on her time at Williams, Fleur shared, "Initially, it took some time to fully grasp that I was part of such a prestigious team. However, the responsibility given to me to improve the car was exhilarating." She emphasized that the level of involvement and responsibility exceeded her expectations, allowing her to contribute meaningfully from day one.
Fleur expressed gratitude for James Vowles’ leadership and commitment to early career programs. "His enthusiasm for supporting young talent is palpable, and it creates a culture where we feel valued and empowered," she stated.
Reece Gerring: Electronics Apprentice
Reece Gerring is currently honing his skills as an Electronics Apprentice at Williams, specializing in wiring, testing, and calibrating advanced electronic systems. His passion for motorsport and technology has been a driving force throughout his career. Before joining Williams, Reece completed a diploma in Sports and Physical Activity Development at Cirencester College while gaining hands-on experience at Screwfix.
When discussing his aspirations, Reece noted that his dream has always been to work in Formula 1. "My goal is to prove that I belong in this competitive environment and to work my way up among the best engineers in the industry," he said.
Reece highlighted the supportive nature of the early careers culture at Williams. "It’s encouraging to see so many others in similar positions, and the interconnectedness of early career participants across departments fosters a strong network." He appreciates the guidance available from colleagues and mentors throughout the organization.
When asked about his ambitions for the future, Reece expressed a willingness to embrace various opportunities while remaining committed to hard work. "I’m open to where my journey leads, but I’m determined to make the most of each opportunity," he concluded.
